We are proud to once again partner with the IKEA Foundation for this year’s Brighter Lives for Refugees (BLFR) campaign, an effort that has already raised tens of millions of dollars for refugees since it first began in 2014.
Between November 29 and December 19, IKEA will donate 1 euro (almost $1) to UNHCR for every lamp or light bulb sold in participating IKEA stores around the world and online, to provide refugee camps light and energy from renewable sources – making them safer for the many families living there.
Today, there are more than 19.5 million refugees under UNHCR’s care, more than half of whom are children. With winter fast approaching, light and warmth are more critical than ever for the safety families and children living in refugee camps, who must cook, wash and study after dark – just like our families do here in the U.S. Having sustainable lighting in camps is a matter of safety and security – especially for women and girls going out or returning home at night.
The funds raised by IKEA through the Brighter Lives for Refugees campaign will help to provide solar street lights, solar powered lanterns, and solar energy systems that will support energy self-reliance among refugees and host communities in UNHCR refugee camps in parts of Asia, Africa and the Middle East. In addition, the campaign will also fund improved access to primary education and allow kids to study later into the night.
How you can help:
- Remember to purchase lamps and light bulbs at participating IKEA stores across the United States (and the world if you are traveling!). For every purchase – close to $1 will be donated to UNHCR to help create brighter lives for refugees.
- Tell your friends and family! Everybody loves IKEA – so remind your friends and family about the promotion. Share the below image on Facebook or Twitter.
