ABOUT UNHCR

For those of you who are not familiar with our work, the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) is the only agency mandated by the international community to care for refugees and find solutions to their plight. Active in most countries, the agency is assisting some 36 million refugees and other forcibly displaced persons.

It is our pleasure to introduce you to the revamped Teachers' Corner! Based on feedback from teachers like you, we have completely redesigned our lesson plans to meet the needs of your classrooms, with updated activities and clearly stated McRel standards. We have also reorganized our site to make it more user-friendly and added new features for you and your students.

Teachers' Corner offers free curricula, games, print and electronic resources to:

  • Help teach the history of refugees and the work of the UN Refugee Agency
  • Further understanding of issues surrounding refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs), human rights and tolerance
  • Demonstrate the relationship between the protection of forcibly displaced populations and human rights

The updated lesson plans, developed by teachers specifically for the UN Refugee Agency, are geared toward elementary, middle and high school classrooms and meet standards for English, Language Arts, Social Studies, and Civics.

Standards & Acccessibility

The curricula feature content-based standards.  In addition, some material has captioning that can augment instruction in ESL and hearing impaired classrooms.

Engaging Activities

Throughout Teachers' Corner you will find free resources to accompany your classroom instruction, in addition to after- and out-of-school activities for students to further their appreciation for key concepts.

Ideas for Making a Difference

We also provide great suggestions for ways that your students can get involved and make a difference in the lives of refugees. Check out our Students Helping Refugees page for ideas!
