UNHCR in the Middle East

UNHCR’s first responsibility is to ensure the protection of refugees in countries of first asylum in the region. To this end, a major operation is currently underway to register refugees in Syria, Jordan and other states in the region. Once refugees are registered, UNHCR’s role in the resettlement process will be to identify those refugees who are in need of resettlement, and to make submissions to the U.S. and other resettlement country programs.

UNHCR’s office in Washington is not directly involved in the registration or resettlement processing of individual resettlement cases in Syria, Jordan, or other overseas locations. Decisions on individual cases are made by the UNHCR offices in these countries, according to established procedures and priorities for that particular country.

How do refugees register with UNHCR?

In order to be considered for UNHCR assistance, refugees must first register with the UNHCR office in their country of asylum. Since early 2007, UNHCR has dramatically increased its staffing to support the large influx of refugees at registration centers. Refugees in need of assistance should approach the registration center (listed below) and will be given an appointment for a future registration date. The waiting period for a registration appointment varies from country to country.
