Perhaps the world not seen anything quite like the rapidly unfolding events across North Africa. The latest news reports show what is happening in the region. But, they may not show the terrified faces of mothers carrying their small children, and the anguish of fathers desperate to protect their families.
Thousands of people, mostly migrant workers, cross from Libya into Tunisia at the border. UNHCR is working with authorities preparing a camp for people who cannot be returned home immediately. Photo (c) UNHCR Make a donation now and help provide emergency aid to tens of thousands of North Africans fleeing into Tunisia and Egypt to escape the persecution and killings in Libya. Right now, our most urgent work is focused on the Libya-Tunisia border. We fear a major movement of people westwards, from Libya into Tunisia. Our first flight carrying humanitarian supplies and tents for emergency shelter has landed Tunisia. UNHCR teams on the ground are reporting unprecedented support being offered by local people who are making their way to the borders of both countries to help. More than 55,000 people have been registered entering the Tunisian border over the past 10 days. And, some 180,000 people have fled Libya to neighboring countries Egypt and Tunisia during the past week of turmoil in the north African nation. We do not yet know the scale of the crisis we will be facing. But we do know that there are thousands of people, including frightened families, who are fleeing their homes with no possessions because their lives are in danger. All they want is to get somewhere safe. Please give an urgent donation to help UNHCR protect innocent civilians, provide them with emergency shelter, and offer basic humanitarian supplies to those who no longer have a place to call home. Our teams on the ground tell us that we can't delay. People need help right now. You can provide much-needed shelter for a family of five by donating $200 to purchase a tent. Or, a donation of $80 will give these refugees 40 wool blankets to protect themselves from the cold. Please, take this opportunity to help them.
