Urgent Help Needed for Refugees Fleeing Violence in Libya

70 flights means 21,000 rescued.

UNHCR emergency teams are working around the clock at key border points with Egypt and Tunisia as more than 220,000 people have already fled the civil unrest and political violence currently taking place in Libya.

Among them are 21,000 foreign workers whose governments are unable to fly them home to safety. $900 brings one of them home. Right now, they are in camps in Tunisia, robbed of their livelihoods, their few valuables, and their families’ lifelines.

We need to fund an additional 70 long-haul flights (300 passenger per flight) to bring these people home now.

UNHCR has airlifted massive amounts of aid, including tents for thousands of people at the borders and items such as kitchen sets, blankets, sleeping mats, jerry cans and tarpaulins. It has also set up a transit camp for 20,000 people near the border at the request of the Tunisian government

But, the story does not end there. Thousands searching for safety, remain at the borders, unable to go home. Many of these refugees have stories about increasing violence in Libya, and of being threatened and targeted.

Your much-neded donation will help provide emergency relief and safe passage home to thousands from all over the world who are fleeing the violence in Libya right now.
