More than 9 million innocent people are displaced and struggling to survive—and an entire generation of children at risk.

In its fourth year of brutal and bitter war, Syria is in ruins and its people are on the run from a nightmare that seems to have no end. Millions are trapped inside Syria in dire condition. Millions of others have overwhelmed neighboring countries —and their numbers and needs grow daily.

UNHCR is coordinating a massive refugee response throughout the region and leading efforts to protect and provide shelter for those displaced inside Syria – work across conflict lines to provide critical aid under extremely dangerous circumstances.

Now in the fourth year of the conflict, there are over 2.9 million Syrian refugees registered by UNHCR.

Syrian refugees are being registered by UNHCR every month.

Children have fled their homes in Syria and are at risk of losing their future.

What's Being Done

UNHCR has deployed more than 600 staff to the region to carry out UNHCR’s largest emergency response in the world.  The effort involves managing and supporting camps and shelters for hundreds of thousands of refugees and internally displaced persons, distributing millions of emergency relief items, providing access to food and medicine for the desperate and vulnerable, and establishing child-friendly spaces for over 4 million out of school children.

Together with support from donors, UNHCR provided the following emergency items in 2013:
