Blackboards are an essential learning tool — especially in a refugee camp, where access to technology can be limited. It costs $120 to equip a classroom in Africa with a blackboard, but the knowledge gained is priceless.

A place to study can be in scarce supply in a refugee camp. A school desk will give a displaced child the opportunity to pursue an education.
Education is a path to a brighter future that is often out of reach for refugee girls and boys. A school uniform is especially important to foster a strong sense of community within the school.
Invest in refugee children by supporting their teachers — some of the most dedicated educators in the world! You can provide teachers with the training materials they need to give their students a solid foundation of learning.
After fleeing civil unrest in Burundi, Lydiella and her family found safety in Rwanda, where the 13-year-old was eager to resume her studies. But classes were conducted in English, not the French she was taught in her homeland. Undaunted, this teenager learned a new language despite only knowing a few words at first. Now it’s her favorite subject.
Today, Lydiella never hesitates when called to the blackboard, especially during English class. With chalk in hand, she confidently diagrams sentences and masters the rules of grammar. She hopes to return to Burundi one day, where she has big plans:
"If one day I return to Burundi, I will teach others English because it is important," she says. "It is spoken around the whole world and so I think if people learn it, it will help them in their life."
In the meantime, Lydiella inspires the younger students in her school, including Zaluich.
Lydiella's fellow student, Zaulich, also enjoys English class.
Jules Ntarindwa relies on the blackboard to teach English to Lydiella, Zaulich and their fellow students at Paysannat primary school, near Mahama refugee camp in Rwanda.
