Cash assistance is keeping her son alive

It's a mother's worst fear — not being able to care for her sick child. But that's the desperate situation Loay's mother faced.

A Syrian refugee, she was struggling to rebuild her family's life in Jordan when her little boy was diagnosed with bladder cancer. With no access to stable employment, she could barely afford food, clothing and shelter — let alone costly and long-term medical treatment.

"The cash assistance is literally what's keeping my son alive."

No mother should worry about affording the care her sick child needs — especially after being forced to leave everything behind. But thanks to the generosity of caring Americans, UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, stepped in to provide humanitarian aid for this family, including vital cash assistance.

Every month, Loay’s mother receives a stipend through a bank card, which has become a lifeline — providing food, medicine and other necessities for her and her son. Just as important, the freedom to buy what she needs the most has restored her dignity. The local economy gets a boost, too, which is especially critical in a country like Jordan, which hosts hundreds of thousands of refugees.

Cash assistance is one of the most effective ways USA for UNHCR supporters help refugees survive. That’s why UNHCR, thanks to generous donor support, will do everything in its power to bring aid, stability and hope to vulnerable refugee families like Loay and his mother for as long as needed.
