500,000 preventable deaths = 500,000 futures gone

Miriam, 7 years old Sudanese refugee girl comes to water point every day to help her mother.

Fatima and her children fled violence in Sudan. They walked for seven days with no access to clean water. As a result, 7-year-old Miriam suffered from diarrhea when they arrived at Maban refugee camp.

It can be hard to imagine that diarrhea is a pervasive cause of death, but every year water-borne diseases that cause diarrhea kill 500,000 children like Miriam.

"I had to make them drink whatever I found on the road. It was painful," Fatima recalled.

Miriam is well now and Fatima is relieved that she can keep her children healthy: "I'm so grateful UNHCR built this facility for us. Now, children can drink clean water wherever they are, school, playground and home. As a mother, I'm really happy for that."

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is grateful for the generous donor support that makes it possible to ensure access to clean, safe water, sanitation and healthcare facilities in refugee camps and settlements.
