Khajida was 12 before she stepped inside a classroom. Back home in Sudan, this bright girl dreamed of going to school, but the nearest one was a 2-hour walk away. Still, life with her parents and siblings was a happy one — until armed groups tore through her hometown, destroyed her family’s house and farm and forced them to flee.
Since finding safety in the UNHCR-supported Doro refugee camp, Khajida’s wish to pursue an education has come true. Despite her late start, she’s happy again — and thriving. “Now I can finally dream,” she says. She’s also helping her family. “Now I can teach my parents and all my little sisters and brothers. My parents are so proud of me,” she continued.
Khajida’s books and pens are some of her most prized possessions. They are her building blocks to a brighter future.
