An unacceptable gap

Education is a key pathway out of poverty, but all too often it is out of reach for refugee girls and boys. School-aged children are supposed to attend school 200 days a year, but 4 million school-aged refugees missed out on going to school in 2017.

A teacher is a refugee child’s champion

Qualified, respected and motivated teachers are the key to closing the refugee education gap — and in the world’s toughest classrooms, they need extra support. That’s why UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, provides training opportunities for teachers to develop and learn new skills. They also support each other, both in-person and virtually, by discussing how they can overcome the challenges they face — and give their students a chance for a brighter future.

A refugee himself, Yel Luka is the head teacher at Unity Elementary School in Kakuma refugee camp, Kenya. He oversees the education of 3,400 children who fled war and violence in South Sudan. The UNHCR-supported training he received has improved his leadership skills. He’s gone on to equip Unity’s other teachers with the tools they need to educate, encourage and inspire their students.

"Our students are more determined to succeed because they can see that their teachers are so motivated to support them achieve their goals."
