A father’s heart-wrenching decision

Even without shelter and winter clothing, Ali knew his children were safer on the run than in Mosul

An Iraqi family displaced by the fighting in Mosul put up their tent at Hasansham camp, as UNHCR delivers cold weather supplies, including warm blankets and stoves.

It was harrowing — the moment when Ali realized that he and his family had no choice but to leave their home in Mosul, Iraq. The day before, his neighbor’s 16-year-old son was killed in a mortar attack that also destroyed his home.

Fearing for his own children’s lives, this dedicated father knew they had to flee. Even though it meant leaving everything behind, it was the choice that gave his family the best chance to survive.

"We left in such a hurry, we didn’t bring anything."

Ali was relieved to find protection at Hasansham, a UNHCR-supported camp in northern Iraq. Upon arrival, he and his family were given a hot meal — the first they had in a long time. With winter quickly approaching, Ali was especially concerned about his children, who were wearing only slippers when they fled: “I worried the kids would get sick eventually,” he recalled.

Thanks to USA for UNHCR donor support, Ali’s concerns were soon alleviated. His family received thermal blankets, a heater, fuel and plastic sheeting to weather-proof their tent. His children now have warm shoes and clothing. With help from donors to endure winter, Ali’s family is hopeful for the future.

Ali and his children are among the hundreds of thousands of Iraqis who fled Mosul when violence tore their communities apart. Many have lost family members and suffered horrific abuse.

The UN Refugee Agency is on the ground and continues to protect vulnerable individuals and families from the cold. In addition to the winter assistance that Ali and his family received, UNHCR also provides:

  • Healthcare
  • Education for children
  • Opportunities for parents to earn an income and support their families
  • Protection for women against sexual and gender-based violence
  • Emotional support to help cope with trauma
