Thanks to the timely action of donors from around the world, UNHCR was able to respond in record time to the earthquake in Ecuador.

An emergency airlift arrived in Ecuador less than 48 hours after the 7.8 magnitude earthquake — the most powerful in decades — struck. Much-needed supplies were then distributed to families in the hardest hit areas.

These items included 900 tents, plastic sheets, 15,000 sleeping mats, kitchen sets, jerry cans and 18,000 mosquito nets.

"We are extremely grateful for how quickly donors and contributors to UNHCR have allowed us to provide this. It has been a record time even for UNHCR to organize an airlift in just a day. "

— Maria Clara Martin, UNHCR Ecuador Country Representative

The UN Refugee Agency was already in Ecuador providing assistance to nearly 150,000 refugees and asylum seekers who have fled violence in Colombia. With the help of a global community of donors, and at the request of the Ecuadorian Government, UNHCR was able to mobilize and quickly respond.
