USA for UNHCR honored at 2019 ANA Genius Awards

USA for UNHCR was honored with the 2019 ANA Genius Awards in the “Data and Analytics Growth” category. The organization was recognized for successfully building and implementing analytics capabilities from scratch within a remarkably short period of time.

ANA Awards 2019- The Hive

The Challenge:

As the global refugee crisis reached unprecedented levels, USA for UNHCR aimed to quadruple its fundraising efforts to meet growing humanitarian needs. But more ambitious goals required innovative solutions.

USA for UNHCR realized that in order to optimize the donor journey and better serve refugees, the organization needed to improve its capacity to collect data on donors and share it between departments. To meet this challenge, The Hive, USA for UNHCR’s innovation lab, developed an in-house analytics platform to optimize programming. 

The Results:

In a few short years, The Hive consolidated 85 percent of USA for UNHCR’s data within their data warehouse, making it easier for teams to target and contact donors across multiple channels. Data collection employed sophisticated techniques - such as topic modeling and natural language processing - and allowed the organization to create audience segmentations based on donor behavior. 

The Hive also conducted data trainings throughout the organization to help departments create and interpret data visualizations. In 2019 alone, USA for UNHCR was able to create 26 custom dashboards with more than 2,790 collective views.

 

USA for UNHCR will donate its Genius Award prize of $25,000 to Refugee Congress, a refugee advocacy organization comprised of resettled refugees from each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia.
