USA for UNHCR Launches the ‘Culture Collective’

USA for UNHCR is pleased to announce the launch of a new community engagement initiative, the Culture Collective—a digital community to highlight the work of refugee artists, authors and creatives and enable allies to take further action in support of the communities we serve.

The Culture Collective features exceptional films, books, music and other forms of art and culture by refugees and about refugee experiences. In celebration of its 20th anniversary, the platform is launching with The Kite Runner—a harrowing story about friendship, love and family by award-winning author and UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Khaled Hosseini.

As the eyes of the world focus on Afghanistan again, Khaled Hosseini reminds us to “stand together with Afghan families, share their stories and remind them that there is a global community of compassionate individuals who care about their safety and their future.”

The Kite Runner is just one of many films, books and other cultural content that will be featured by the Culture Collective throughout 2023 as the initiative grows. With every featured content drop, the Culture Collective’s community of compassionate supporters is encouraged to take a range of actions with and for refugees. In connection with reading or watching The Kite Runner, examples include:

“USA for UNHCR has always been honored and inspired to feature the creative work of those who have been forced to flee, celebrating the culture and traditions of the people we serve.  Through the Culture Collective we will expand our ability to share this beautiful content and spur even more action in support of refugees,” says Jennifer Simon, USA for UNHCR’s Senior Director of Advocacy & Community Engagement.
