I remember the very first time my heart was set on fire with a passion for service and a dream to leave this world a better, safer place than I found it. I was 10, and I spent my childhood running out of rooms or behind couches every time my parents turned on the news. I tried to distract myself with any activity I could to shut out the very real and very scary world playing out on those screens. That all changed one morning when my father went to work bright and early on what seemed like very ordinary day at the Pentagon. We are incredibly fortunate my father returned home on 9/11, but after my immense relief I quickly began grappling with what this meant about the world and my place in it. I came to terms with the fact that no matter how many times I tried to shut those screens off, it would never turn off reality –or the pain and suffering those screens conveyed. From then on, I wanted to do something to help vulnerable people. I was just a kid but the memory and feeling from that day are my everlasting source of motivation.
