Stand with families seeking asylum

Thousands of people currently face grave risks in northern Mexico as they try to seek safety in the United States. Many are resilient families fleeing deadly gang violence, extortion, sexual assault or persecution in their countries.

The UN Refugee Agency is working along both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border, partnering with civil society, governments, faith-based organizations, legal service providers and others to better protect asylum seekers, especially the most vulnerable among them. But families seeking asylum at the U.S. southern border are being sent back to Mexico or to the countries they fled under Title 42, an expulsion policy that the U.S. government put into use in 2020 under which asylum seekers are denied the opportunity to ask for asylum. Under international refugee law, refugees and asylum seekers have the right to be protected, to have their claims heard, and not to be returned to where their lives are in danger. Title 42 undermines this right by denying people access to asylum procedures.

As the number of people forced to flee is growing by the day, it's crucial that we as Americans and global citizens welcome people seeking safety from conflict. Let's build a movement of solidarity for refugees and asylum seekers across the globe, including those approaching the U.S. southern border. Every day that Title 42 remains in place, thousands of people are at continued risk of violence and persecution.
