UNHCR launches #WithRefugees solidarity tour

WASHINGTON, DC (April 4, 2018) – UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, kicks off its #WithRefugees World Tour on Friday April 6, International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, with a series of sport demonstrations and cultural activities at Jordan’s Za’atari refugee camp.

The #WithRefugees World Tour will run through October and is made up of dozens of public events to raise awareness and inspire more action in support for people who have been forced to flee conflict or persecution.

On June 2, the #WithRefugees World Tour stops in Washington, DC for the first annual One Journey Festival.

Sponsored in part by USA for UNHCR, One Journey is an all-day festival held on the front lawn of the Washington National Cathedral to celebrate refugees and their stories of resilience and hope. The festival will connect participants through the shared languages of humanity: art, fashion, food, music & dance from the countries that today’s refugees originally called home. Celebrities will perform with refugee chefs, musicians and dancers.

“By taking action, people can show solidarity and care about refugees. Each individual action counts,” said UNHCR’s Chief of Campaigns, Events and Goodwill Ambassadors Leigh Foster.

Other events on the tour will include a fashion show in Chicago featuring fabrics made by refugees in Kenya, a refugee football match in Ireland, a photo exhibit in Paris, a week of events on Jeju Island, South Korea and judo competitions and workshops in South Africa. The tour will end on October 1 at UNHCR’s Nansen Refugee Award Ceremony in Geneva.
